Bachelor of the Year? No chance, says Brett

Jason Avedissian

MANLY and Australian fullback Brett Stewart says he is ``long odds'' to win the 21st annual Cleo Bachelor of the Year award this year.

The sheepish 22-year-old was one of 50 nominees named yesterday, a list which also includes peninsula ironman Brad Gaul and Getaway presenter Jason Dundas.

Stewart, who was named The Footy Show's Sexiest Man in League last year, said the awards are a good excuse to get away from training.

``I'm long odds... don't worry about that,'' he told The Manly Daily when asked if he could win the coveted title which will be unveiled at a black-tie event on March 18.

``I'm not going to win this one. It's just a bit of fun and you get to meet some interesting people.''

While Stewart believes he's a no-hoper, Gaul said the Sea Eagles flyer is the man. ``He's looking good,'' Gaul said after an exhaustive day of media commitments yesterday. ``He's a super-star. I'm just going along for the ride and just want to get to the party.''

Stewart's nomination yesterday may have helped ease the pain of the Sea Eagles' crushing 56-10 trial loss to premiers Melbourne Storm at Bluetongue Stadium on Friday.

Stewart did not play in the Grand Final replay as he continues his recovery following off-season surgery on his ankle. Manly will have this weekend off, ahead of playing the New Zealand Warriors on the Sunshine Coast on February 29.
