Fate comes knocking

Andrew Tillett

The charity has moved staff into a new office at Terrey Hills following the December fire that gutted the administration building at its Allambie Heights headquarters.

Virtually all the centre's memorabilia was destroyed in the blaze.

But in an amazing piece of good fortune, the doorknocker from the Spastic Centre's first home in Mosman was not in the burnt out building.

Long-serving staff members Judith Geppert and Robyn Cummings had uncovered the doorknocker and taken it home.

They gave it to Spastic Centre president Marelle Thornton after the fire wrapped up as a Christmas present.

The knocker is emblazoned with the words ``Entry to Hope''.

``As well as being a magnificent piece of history it's a real piece symbolic of hope for the future,'' The Spastic Centre's fundraising manager Pauline Keyvar said the organisation had raised more than $400,000 in its fire appeal to help rebuild.

About 120 administration staff have settled into the Spastic Centre's temporary Terrey Hills office. Landlord Domenic Polistina has discounted the rent for the office space, with staff expected to spend up to two years there while their office is rebuilt.

Donations to the Spastic Centre's fire appeal can be made at Commonwealth Bank branches or by calling 1300850538.

Anyone with Spastic Centre memorabilia should call 94797200.
