SURF Life Saving Northern Beaches is facing the future with a new man at the helm.
Doug Menzies, the former head of the Westpac Lifesaver Rescue Helicopter service, will carry out a comprehensive review of the organisation.
Mr Menzies, who has also been president of Newport SLSC, is taking over from outgoing chief executive officer Martin Phillips for between two and six months.
``I'm very passionate about what happens in Surf Life Saving Northern Beaches," he said. ``I'm looking forward to the challenge.
``What the branch executive will do now is see what requirements are needed to take it into the next generation.
``What was appropriate ten years ago might not be appropriate today."
SLS Northern Beaches president Gordon Lang said Mr Menzies was the only person they could find with the relevant experience with surf lifesaving and with management.
``His major role is to look at what we need to move ahead over the next five years,'' he said. ``He brings lot of experience, knowledge and contacts.
``The major goal we'll give him as interim CEO is to look where we'll take SLS Northern Beaches in the next five years, what sort of branch structure we need and how we manage the staffing requirements and resources.
``Doug's a very nice guy and we know he'll do a great job here.''
Mr Phillips has resigned to become executive director of the Australasia Region Association for Zoological Parks and Aquaria, which represents all 74 zoos and aquaria in Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific.
