IT'S A world away from playing Captain Von Trapp in The Sound Of Music, but Simon Westaway is relishing his role in gritty crime drama Underbelly.
The Manly actor says the Nine series, which portrays Melboune's underworld during the late 1990s, is a "great Australian story" that demands to be told.
"This program hits all the interest points for people," he said.
"The launch of Underbelly has rated the highest of any Australian drama in the history of the survey system in this country."
The series, which airs on Nine tonight, hit the headlines before it was even screened as it was banned in Victoria, where trials are ongoing.
Westaway plays Mick Gatto in episode 11, a character whose role as a negotiator and arbitrator requires him to step into the fray.
Westaway was last seen locally in last year's charity production of The Sound of Music.
"It's an interesting business that you can go from doing a charity show like that to doing something like Underbelly," he said.
