Business survey calls for traffic corridor fix

Kelly Robinson

ALMOST 600 businesses are calling on the State Government to fix the peninsula's traffic woes with an upgraded northern beaches transport corridor.

The BusinessWise 2020 survey found broad support for the construction of key roads in Sydney and an urgent investment in public transport, particularly on the northern beaches.

More than half of the NRMA BusinessWise members surveyed (56 per cent) said a northern beaches corridor, combining public transport and road upgrades, was integral to business.

The survey also reveals business owners believed this would reduce transport and petrol costs and improve travel times.

More than two-thirds of BusinessWise members (68 per cent) said the peninsula corridor would cut the amount of time their vehicles would spend in traffic.

NRMA director Geoff Toovey said almost one-quarter (22 per cent) believed the savings would be between 20 to 30 minutes or more for each vehicle in their fleet.

"The 2020 conference will be held in Canberra soon yet in Sydney today many roads have barely improved since 1920," Mr Toovey said.

The survey follows years of battling by northern beaches drivers to upgrade the notoriously congested Spit Bridge.
