A DEEP-POCKETED punter has plunged a five-figure bet on northern beaches hope Sebring to win the $3.5million Golden Slipper Stakes.
TAB Corp has registered a $20,000 bet on the boom colt to win the world's richest race for two-year-olds at Rosehill Gardens today..
The Gia Waterhouse-trained galloper has maintained his position as favourite for the AAMI Golden Slipper in the lead-up to the race after it drew a dream gate barrier six in the wet and is paying $6 to win.
The chestnut colt is the only runner in the race to have proven himself on a dead track.
Punters have plunged about $1.8million on the race so far, about $220,000 on Sebring alone, and expect the floodgates to open as the race nears today.
Champion Melbourne Cup-winning jockey Glen Boss will be on board Sebring for the Slipper after his regular jockey, Blake Shinn, was suspended for careless riding.
Part-owner Shahen Mekertichian said he was more and more nervous as the race got closer.
``The rain is a great sign for us and I can't believe it's actually here after all the stops and starts,'' he said. ``I'll just be happy if we do really well.
``Everyone's got a chance in the race and it would be an absolute fantasy if we won. Anywhere in the top three and I'll be happy.''
Sebring's connections will wear matching ties and scarves splashed with the purple-and-white star silks, the colt's racing colours, to bring them good luck today.
TAB spokesman Glen Munsie said he expected the track to be between slow and heavy today after a week of rain.
Centrebet media chief Neil Evans said Sebring was still the best-backed horse.
``Sebring will certainly hold as the favourite for the race, but he's under assault from All American and Von Costa De Hero,'' he said.
Northern beaches designers Abby Moir, of Dee Why, and Rebecca Vize, of Mona Vale, will go head-to-head during the National Young Designer Awards final at Rosehill Gardens.
Miss Moir said she had been working all week trying to get everything ready.
``I've been making the outfit I'm wearing today and getting everything finalised.''
