Plastic is bagged by majority

RESIDENTS are divided but marginally in favour of Manly Council's ban of plastic bags and containers at the new Totem Shopping centre in Balgowlah.

The council became the first in the state to successfully require a plastic-free policy as part of a development consent earlier this month.

However, while the move received praise from Clean Up Australia's Ian Kiernan, it was met with a split reception by Manly Daily readers in a poll this week.

The poll, conducted by The Manly Daily, asked: " Do you agree with council moves to ban plastic bags and plastic containers at the new Totem shopping centre?"

Of the 74 people who responded, only a slight majority agreed with the ban with 42 people, or 56 per cent, supporting it.

It seems 43 per cent or 32 respondents obviously like their shopping to go in plastic bags and they disagreed with the ban.
