Netball home option gets joint support

NORTHERN beaches sporting groups are backing Warringah Council's proposal to overhaul John Fisher Park's netball complex.
Manly Warringah Netball Association and the Manly Warringah Sporting Union told The Manly Daily they would support the new plans for 11 new surfaced courts.
Both groups hope the North Curl Curl community will accept the plan to keep netballers in a centralised location.
Warringah administrator Dick Persson announced the proposed community agreement for the park on Tuesday night after he was forced to dump plans to build a netball complex at a Belrose quarry.
The council abandoned the site after it was revealed the cost of stabilising the land was $10 million over budget.
The current $4 million proposal involves building 11 new hard-surfaced courts, including an indoor court, three bitumen courts in the car park and seven new courts.
Mr Persson's plan will also upgrade facilities and open up a 12,000sq m recreation area.
Manly Warringah Netball Association president Jane Hauser said she hoped the community supported the idea.
"We're aware a new home is not going to happen and Mr Persson has tried to find a solution for years. We really want to work with the community and we hope there's not going to be a huge backlash against it."
Manly Warringah Sporting Union president Eric Galloway said Mr Persson must make a decision on the issue before his term ended.
"(Mr Persson) has worked hard on this for years and unfortunately has not found the perfect solution, but it's critical for the community that a decision is made. The union supports the proposal."
Residents can now comment on the proposal and a decision will be made in June.
