Man faces court over home attack

A DIAGNOSED schizophrenic has appeared in court after allegedly punching a 73-year-old man in the head and trying to strangle him at his Balgowlah Heights home.
Joseph Anthony Cannon, of Burwood, was remanded in custody after briefly appearing at Manly Court yesterday following an alleged violent altercation.
The 44-year-old has been charged with maliciously inflicting grievous bodily harm on Beresford Waterman with "intent to do so" at the victim's Ernest St home on Tuesday.
It is alleged a fight broke out between the men and Mr Cannon seriously assaulted the elderly pensioner, punching him in the head and attempting to strangle him.
The incident occurred between 5pm and 6pm and police arrested Mr Cannon at the scene.
Yesterday Mr Waterman, was recovering after an operation at the Royal North Shore Hospital to install a tube in his throat to assist his breathing and to carry out facial surgery.
