Change to bus route worries travellers

RESIDENTS of Manly's Eastern Hill are about to lose part of their local bus service, the 135, which runs from Manly Wharf and North Head.
The State Transit Authority is going to cut part of the route to exclude streets above Fairy Bower, including Bower, Reddall, Cliff and College streets, because they are unsuitable for wheelchair-accessible buses.
The STA says Bower St is particularly unsuitable, but local residents say there is an alternative route that would avoid Bower St while still servicing the other streets above Fairy Bower.
The STA took over the private bus service that previously operated the route and residents believe the STA gave an undertaking at the time that it would retain the full service. Now the STA hopes Manly Council will take up the slack with its Hop, Skip & Jump mini-bus service.
"This decision hasn't been taken lightly," an STA spokesman said.
"We have a requirement that we have to introduce a wheelchair-accessible fleet.
"We are in discussions with Manly Council for the opportunity of providing transport for the people in the Bower St area."
