Teen girls: 'pre-fuel' to rampage

17 May 2008
STREET offences and vandalism by young females on the peninsula has jumped over the past decade, according to police statistics.
A study of female juvenile crime involving girls aged 1017 shows those arrested for disorderly conduct which includes anti-social behaviour, offensive conduct and offensive behaviour has risen ninefold over the period between 1998 and 2008.
The number of young girls arrested for malicious damage has jumped 300 per cent over the same period.
Most concerning for Manly local area commander Supt Dave Darcy is that there has been no reduction in the number of young girls being arrested for assault.
Last year, 26 underage girls were arrested for assault not related to domestic violence.
"That's what bothers me," he said. "There is a problem with binge drinking around Manly, which we have been working on with the council and the licensing accord.
"But in recent times we've seen a greater tendency for young people to "pre-fuel", meaning they get drunk before they reach The Corso.
"Those pre-fuelling spots are dotted around Manly, mainly in parks and behind buildings.
"We'll be visiting those "pre-fuelling locations and take appropriate action.
"But the big issue is the number of assaults.
"Despite all the effort the council and the police have put into this, there has been no reduction in the number of assaults by young girls.
"That's not good enough."
